ASSOCIATED ARTIST – AMALA DIANOR, by JOËLLE SMADJA
/ DIRECTOR POLE-SUD, CDCN STRASBOURG
What does this expression mean? How does an artist work at a venue, honoring his own language and his intentions while also responding to and being fully aware of his surroundings? These are the stakes involved in this kind of relationship.
The aesthetic form, relational qualities, responsiveness and creative capacity were all qualities that drew us to Amala Dianor, a generous and prolific artist. He has focused his work on the energies involved in meeting, in encounter -- and his work is comprised of the diverse codes and vocabulary of hip hop dance blended with those of contemporary dance. In this two part approach we see his unique, recognizable style, flowing and elegant
His ability to mix the different genres was one of the reasons we asked him to create a participative work, Trajets Phéno-Meinau. Onstage we find teenagers and amateur adult dancers, professionals, people from the City and from Meinau, evoking our and their fraternity and how we move beyond our differences.

The title and the subject of this piece symbolize for me the attention POLE-SUD focuses on its region-- our venue has been here for more than 40 years, and its missions have changed over the years, finally receiving the national designation of Center for the Development of Choreography. This honor has allowed us to direct our attention to words and projects which prioritize our immediate environment: the Meinau (an area in Strasbourg). Our ambition is to be a player equal to all others participating in the combat against social inequality. Art and artists are formidable vectors of cultural emancipation, and we must work together for the common good and find a way to live and work in harmony.
